I had a major gastritis and esophagitis episode over the last 6 weeks. I’m a huge coffee (caffeine) drinker so I wanted to share some of my experimentation in trying to get through it and still enjoy some caffeine and a hot drink to start my day.

Heartburn Remedies Doesn't Help (🔴 Acid Reflux) | Heartburn Remedies Home Remedies Forhow to Heartburn Remedies for Coffee - this is the main culprit for me and probably a major trigger that combined with other circumstances to cause my recent episode. I have my morning coffee and really never recover in terms of heartburn pain the rest of the day. My appetite is all over the place. Nothing helps me recover other than time. Cold water gulping feels good. That’s about it.

Heartburn Remedies What Is The Best (👍 10 Foods To Eat) | Heartburn Remedies How To Naturally Treathow to Heartburn Remedies for Espresso - I tried switching to espresso (americanos, which to clarify is about 1 part espresso to 2 parts water) and is supposedly less acidic. Maybe so, but I still feel all of the same coffee symptoms mentioned above. Makes me think that it’s not the acidity, but the amount of caffeine that affects the LES (esophageal sphincter) and releases acid above the stomach.

Matcha - I thought a matcha or matcha latte would be a good way to get some caffeine (I need it!!!) I tried a regular cup of high quality matcha (actually some that i bought in Japan earlier the 1 last update 04 Jun 2020 this year so I knew it was really pure) and it did not go down well. I had some gastric pain and discomfort. I tried a match latte with almond milk with a lot of optimism. No dice there. Still some discomfort.Matcha - I thought a matcha or matcha latte would be a good way to get some caffeine (I need it!!!) Heartburn Remedies Acidity (⭐️ Diet) | Heartburn Remedies Holidayhow to Heartburn Remedies for Green tea - lastly, per some info I found on a medical journal website, green tea promotes supposedly good stomach secretions and gastric healing. All that sounds good, right? So the last few mornings — on a stomach full of quality breakfast food like hormone free and fat free yogurt/kiefer, organic range free eggs, or whole wheat toast (I know this sound snobby, but the best ingredients count when you are trying to not irritate your sensitive digestive system) — I’ve been having total success with high quality pure green tea. Not too hot and with a little organic local honey (again snob disclaimer). Two cups in, I have my caffeine fix and no heartburn pain and the day is off to a good start. I will just say that I know enough about tea to be just a little dangerous and I would recommend not over brewing — don’t make your water too hot (take water to just boiling and then take off heat for 2 mins before steeping), don’t steep longer than 2 minutes, and in my experience jasmine style green tea seems more acidic and problematic. My theory with green tea is that it has the purest ingredients, isn’t modified via roasting (like coffee/espresso) and that you get less of a jolt of caffeine like coffee/espresso and this easing doesn’t cause the LES to open. Just my theory.

Just thought I’d share my experimentation here. Any comments and other experiences are welcome. We need to figure this stuff out together — I ask my doctor about this stuff and she just shrugs and says it’s an individual thing and to take my omeprazole and Zantac. 😂

Have a great day.

Green tea has way less caffeine and way less acid. Chances are when you drink coffee its the caffeine that’s affecting your LES and the acid irritating your inflamed esophagus

Indeed. That was my theory but you articulated that succinctly. Thanks!

Similar experience with each of the above. I used to mainline coffee - espresso and matcha still trigger me but less than coffee - and now I mainline green tea with zero issues! When I need more of a caffeine kick I add upper herbs - but for a warm delicious slightly stimulating beverage, green tea is my new fix.

Thank you for sharing , glad it works for you! It's so depressing not being able to drink coffee, isn't it? I was a huge coffee lover before I got a hernia. Ugh makes me so annoyed this happened to me. I feel like I am constantly smelling it, I want it so much lol.

I also have tried the espresso , americano , cold brew and it all causes bad symptoms that can last weeks. That's after only three or four sips.

Yep. Agreed. It’s just a few sips sometimes.

Cold brew gets me really bad too.

I can have Matcha, Coffee gets me acidic. Soon I will try a "clean" pre-workout and I pray that I can handle it. Dr Jamie Koufman's books on GERD and LPR helped me tremendously. As did https://www.refluxgate.com/ultimate-guide-to-lpr-causes-and-treatment. Btw and FYI Good luck to us all!
